What's a sale worth?
Everybody talks about one more sale and how important it is, yet most Dealers and Managers couldn't tell you the real benefit to the dealership of another sale and another $500 per unit in higher gross profit. And because they don't understand how even small incremental growth effects the bottom line, when you combine that with their lack of real tracking in the dealership, almost every management staff ends up with some highball goal that was based on a starting number that wasn't even close. Believe it - there is a better way!
What's "Good Gross"?
If you already sell 100 units, you've already gone to almost all of the expense that it takes to go ahead and sell 110 or 120 or 150 and maybe even 200 units instead. The fixed expenses are covered, you already have a sales force, there are already plenty of prospects on the lot, on the phone, in service and in your current customer base to increase sales and gross. And when you increase unit sales and gross without adding any new expenses, that's what we call "Good Gross".
What do I mean? Well, if you sell 100 units at a 20% closing ratio, that means that you have about 500 prospects on the lot each month. And again, the rent, the advertising and everything else is already paid. So if you can sell 110 units instead of just 100, those next 10 units come in with almost no expense other than sales payroll. And that means those extra sales above 100, generate initial profits of around 60%. And the same is true if you raise the gross $500 per unit - that extra gross and those next sales are almost all "Pure Profit". And yes, of course it doesn't stay at 60%, but when high profits settle down to the bottom line, it's real easy to turn that 2% into 4% or easy to turn 3% into 6% on that final "net profit" line on your financial statement.
Doubling your net profit is the easiest thing you can do - but you can't do it with more advertising, tent sales or other promotions. Why? Because to make those extra sales, you incur extra expenses and now you have good gross gone bad.
Answer a couple questions below about sales in your dealership. Assume that each question starts with "Without spending any more money on advertising..."
q  Could you increase your unit sales if your salespeople treated more people who are already on your lot each month as buyers?
q  Could you increase unit sales if your salespeople did a better job of presenting and demonstrating your product, especially if they gave more people who were already on your lot a better presentation and demonstration.
q  Could you increase unit sales if your salespeople had more effective skills when it comes to handling price questions, price objections and if they knew more about how to respond to those prospects armed with information off the internet?
q  Could you increase unit sales if your salespeople had more effective closing skills and got stronger commitments before they brought their customers inside?
q  Could you increase unit sales if your salespeople had more effective skills at setting up the negotiation properly and then had more skills at the actual negotiation itself?
q  Could you increase unit sales if your salespeople followed up every un-sold prospect to get them back on the lot for that second chance to close the sale?
q  Could you increase unit sales if your salespeople followed up every sold prospect they had to build their / your customer base for the future?
q  Could you increase unit sales if your salespeople were more effective at handling those incoming calls and turning more prospects into appointments on the lot?
q  Would the gross go up because of each of the above, too?
  Of course they could sell more units and of course the gross would increase - that isn't even a question. The only question is will you teach them how and will management learn how to manage them in today's market so that your dealership can grow every year.
Let's take a look at how this works...
  If you got serious - with effective training and good management in the areas above, could each of your salespeople improve by just one unit every 90 days or 4 units in the next 12 months?
  And again, if you got serious, could you increase your gross profit per unit by $250 in the next 12 months from those same areas above?
